A quick guide to help you understand what is oculoplastic surgery?

Oculoplastic surgery is a specialized complex field of medicine that incorporates the microsurgery of ophthalmology with the aesthetic concepts of plastic surgery (also known as ophthalmic plastic surgery). This division of ophthalmology, along with cosmetic eyelid and brow surgery, focuses on plastic and reconstructive surgery of the eyelids, tear ducts, and orbit. With Botox/Xeomin, and facial fillers such as Juvederm, Radiesse, and Belotero, oculoplastic surgeons also conduct cosmetic rejuvenation procedures on the face.

The different procedures performed in the surger

Among the most frequently performed procedures by an eyelid oculoplastic surgeon is blepharoplasty and ptosis repair to correct droopy eyelids. To restore a more youthful appearance and enhance peripheral vision, blepharoplasty is a procedure to remove excess sagging skin and muscle from the eyelids. The cosmetic benefits of the surgery are more evident when excess fatty tissue and eyelid bags are trimmed away. Ptosis repair is an eyelid raising operation to restore the edge of the eyelid to its natural state above the pupil (from where the eyelashes emerge). Blepharoplastic and ptosis repair recovery is swift and typically not painful.

The best brow lift procedure

A brow lift is a procedure in which the eyebrows are lifted down to their usual anatomical position. In males, the usual brows rest over the eyes at or just above the frontal bone. Natural brows are typically higher in women, resting above the bone. Surgery to raise the brows may be done if they are sagging below these areas. In conjunction with blepharoplasty and/or ptosis repair, brow lifting may also be performed in an outpatient environment at an ambulatory surgery center.

  • The tear ducts are the natural passageway from the eyes and down the nose and throat for tears to drain.
  • A blockage in these tubes can cause the eyes to weep, kind of like a clogged drain. Surgery may be undertaken to bypass the blockage or open it to restore the regular flow of tears.
  • This technique is referred to as DCR or dacryocystorhinostomy.
  • In the new tear drain, tiny plastic tubes are also inserted to allow for proper healing around the surgery site.
  • Usually, these tubes remain in place for three to six months and can be withdrawn from the office.

What after the biopsy is done?

Sometimes, tumors appear around the eyelids and the eye socket (orbit) and need to be treated. An oculoplastic surgeon may diagnose and treat the condition after a biopsy is completed, whether a benign condition such as a style or skin tag or a potentially malignant condition such as skin cancer or metastasis. The biopsy can be conducted in the office in certain cases. Some of the more common eyelid skin cancers that can occur with sun damage to the region are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, sebaceous gland carcinoma, and melanoma.

The conditions that can influence the location of the eyelids are ectropion and entropion. An ectropion is present when the eyelid turns out away from the eye. Tearing and persistent discomfort with discharge sometimes result in this. Entropion is present when the eyelid turns toward the eye and allows the eyelashes to rub against the eye’s surface. To fix this condition, outpatient or office surgery is typically required.

Botox, Xeomin, Radiesse, Juvederm, and Belotero are topical injectables used to relax the face’s fine lines and wrinkles. Glabella and crow’s feet are the most prevalent Botox injection sites. With fillers, other deeper lines around the face may be handled.
